At the end of the year, we celebrated the retirement of my cousin, Peter M. Miller, after six years as president and CEO. Like the presidents before him, he understood the responsibility and privilege our uncle, Algur H. Meadows, gave his family to serve the people of Texas.

Peter led with energy, conviction, and business acumen that was honed during a successful career in the financial services business. His ability to bring people together around shared goals, combined with his strategic insight and genuine care for others, made an enduring difference for countless people in Texas. When Peter took the helm in January 2020, he assumed the role with ideas for change and passion for making a difference; however, the needs shifted in March, and his leadership and resolve would be tested in ways that no one could imagine. With years of management experience through multiple financial crises, Peter expertly guided the Foundation during the uncertain times of a global pandemic. He adopted new systems of communication and led the modernization of our internal operations.

His accomplishments in philanthropy were many, including creating a funders collaborative to rethink how homelessness in North Texas is addressed and extending the significant research of The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment at Texas State University to a new water science institute at Sul Ross University in Alpine. Back in Dallas, his revitalization of the Wilson Historic District included establishing Liberty Street Garden, Hugs Café, Café Momentum, and laying the important groundwork for the Dallas College Early Childhood Educator Lab School and VNA’s Katherine’s House.

As I step into this position, I am inspired by strategic opportunities that lie ahead in grantmaking — ranging from hyper-local, place-based initiatives within our own Wilson Historic District to groundbreaking statewide initiatives that promote system-level change. Despite advancements in so many aspects of our daily lives, there is no diminishment to the challenges facing the people and communities of our state. With over $1.5 billion total dollars granted to nonprofit entities in every corner of Texas, I am profoundly honored to carry the torch alongside an exceptionally talented and professional team. My foremost goal is to build upon the transformative work of my predecessors, Curtis W. Meadows Jr., Linda Perryman Evans, and, most recently, Peter M. Miller. They all shared a steadfast belief in philanthropy’s power to fund innovative solutions to local and statewide problems.

Finally, I am grateful for the example that Al Meadows set for generations of our family. Despite remarkable business success and a renowned art collection, generosity was the lasting hallmark of his life. I am certain his most profound legacy will be the many lives and institutions that have been improved by the Foundation he created over 78 years ago.

With deep appreciation for the road already traveled and great confidence as we forge the path ahead.

All the best,

Eric R.
